 Befrienders Story - Barbara

Having moved to Norfolk in July 2002 I had been unsuccessful in finding a job. I worked previously as a medical receptionist and have always loved talking to people so missed my colleges and friends  very much. Although I had been doing a voluntary job with the local Cancer Rearch UK branch I needed something more to fill my time; something rewarding and fulfilling.

Whilst walking my dog one day I discovered Carmel’s poster recruiting volunteers for her Befriending  Scheme. I was very interested and called her straight away. The rest, as they say, is history. I have been visiting  Clipsie for sometime now. We get on extremely well and she has  become a very special friend . We share our problems and our joys and we know so much about each other’s lives we seem like old friends.

Most days we have a trip out somewhere, whatever the weather. This summer we have visited Hunstanton, Bircham Windmill, Wells and a couple of garden centres to name but a few; always ending with tea and a cake somewhere! I hope that my visits to Clipsie have re-kindled her interest in many things, especially painting and I look forward to my weekly chats with my special friend!

Client’s Story - Clipsie

How my life has changed since “Befrienders” came into it.

Since my husband died 16 yrs ago, life has become isolated and lonely with very little contact with other people due to where I live, and the fact that my family are so far away, and arthritis limits me taking part in my various hobbies which I used to be very involved in.

But now through “Befrienders” I have a good friend in Barbara; we get on so well, and talk and talk! I feel as if I have known her for years, and we share the same sense of humour. We have most enjoyable outings, and it’s  so lovely to be part of the big wide world again!

So thank you Carmel for finding me such a good friend, and to Barbara for all her kindness and  friendship.

Befrienders Story - Doreen

When I first read about West Norfolk Befrienders I thought what a brilliant idea it was. I know how isolated people feel when they are housebound or cut off from their families and, as I have first-hand experience of caring for a disabled husband in a wheelchair, I decided to give a bit of my time to visiting someone else, as my husband is quite independent and can be left for a while.

When I contacted Carmel I was welcomed with open arms and went through the induction course fairly quickly. She assigned me to Doreen, who had problems with getting out and about, and we soon established a good rapport and we both look forward to our weekly meetings.

As I am used to dealing with wheelchairs and have a high seat car we are able to get out and do things which we both enjoy. We always find somewhere nice for a cuppa and toasted teacake and the chance to sit and chat. We both seem to share the same opinions of the state of the world and other subjects, and we both see the funny side of things and spend quite a bit of time laughing. I have been able to take her shopping in Tesco and the local charity shops and round the market, and we have had rides around the coast and across country.

I am sure that I enjoy our meetings as much as she does and I really look forward to Wednesdays.

I am so pleased that I responded to the article and I'm sure other volunteers feel the same way. It is one of the most rewarding things I have ever done and I have met a very special new friend.

Client's Story - Cathy

I was fed up with being stuck in the house since breaking my hip five years ago.

I used to be able to walk with two sticks and get into my neighbour's car, but now I use a walking frame and need a wheelchair when out since breaking my thigh bone last year. I am unable to get into normal cars and need am ambulance for hospital appointments. As Cathy has a high car I am able to get out and about at last.

Now I really look forward to Wednesdays - it's the highlight of my week.
We've been all over the place - and bought bargains along the way! I was able to go to King's Lynn for the first time in twelve years and choose new curtains.

Cathy and I get on so well together - we always have a laugh and put the world to rights.
